HerbHub is a community herb growing project, rooted in the principle that communities are strengthened and united through shared purpose.

The project invites people of all ages and from all walks of life, to work

together, building connections and community through herb horticulture, knowledge

and craft. By caring for urban green spaces, for ourselves and for each other, we

can positively impact our health and well-being, our communities and the planet.

HerbHub establishes herb growing sites, in partnership with community groups and

organisations who have land which is underused.

With a small staff team, our HerbHub volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Our

growing sites are cared for collaboratively by Volunteer Growing Site Stewards,

HerbHub staff and the host organisation and its users.

HerbHub Growing Site Stewards receive regular training in all aspects of the

horticultural journey from propagating, nurturing, harvesting, drying and creating with

the herbs, to their medicinal and culinary uses. Volunteer Site Stewards build their

skills, knowledge and confidence enabling them to cascade their knowledge to

others in the community.

We focus on the cultivation and care of a small, replicable selection of familiar herbs,

chosen for their proven medicinal and health-boosting properties and for their

culinary value. Rooted in scientific research, these key herbs improve memory and

mood and target the health conditions which have impacted many of us more post-

pandemic.

The herbs are harvested and utilised by the host organisations, their users and the

local community, so they all benefit from their medicinal and culinary value.

However, most are harvested and brought to our community drying site to be

collectively prepared and dried. Growing and harvesting the herbs across multiple

smaller sites, enables us to produce dried herbs at scale, allowing us to explore

product creation and development.

HerbHub currently oversees six core growing sites, located in the

Teams/Bensham/Dunston area of Gateshead: Within a primary school, a youth

project, a probation service hostel, an over 55’s sheltered housing scheme, a project

supporting refugees and asylum seekers and within an allotment association site.

Alongside our core sites we offer training, consultancy and support to new

organisations who wish to establish their own HerbHub growing site and join the

HerbHub movement!
